DescriptionAbout this Learning Opportunity
This course prepares learners to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Learners will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and will review the skills needed to perform venipuncture safely. Topics include medical terminology, related anatomy and physiology, blood collection procedures, and procedures for collection of other types of specimens within the scope of practice of a phlebotomist. Additionally, learners will be prepared to take the NHA Phlebotomy Technician certification exam, the industry-recognized credential in the Phlebotomy field. Program Objectives: Train students to properly collect and handle blood specimens for laboratory analysis. Emphasize safety, infection control, and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration and CLIA standards. Develop patient communication and professionalism skills critical to success in clinical environments. Prepare students for the national certification exam for Phlebotomy Technicians. Equip graduates to begin working in hospitals, labs, physician offices, and other healthcare facilities. Curriculum Topics Include: Anatomy & Physiology of the Circulatory System Medical Terminology Related to Phlebotomy Venipuncture and Capillary Collection Techniques Bloodborne Pathogens and Infection Control Specimen Processing and Handling Safety Procedures and OSHA/CLIA Compliance Patient Identification and Preparation Professionalism and Patient Communication Special Collections (pediatrics, geriatrics, difficult draws) Pre-analytical Errors and Quality Assurance
