DescriptionAbout this Learning Opportunity
NJFH ICON Training is Friendship Houses Innovative Culinary Opportunity Network. The training is designed for adults with disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorders who are interested in obtaining employment in the food service industry. NJFH ICON Training introduces trainees to culinary language through an interactive, hands-on approach. Trainees will receive a thorough overview of prep methods (e.g. chopping, mincing, dicing), basic measuring techniques, identification of foods and spices, cooking temperatures and times, and proper plating, packaging, and storage techniques. Additionally, participants will become familiar with kitchen essentials, including; safety and sanitation, dishwashing standards, names and functions of utensils and appliances, and serving and dining-room protocols. Participants will be instructed on food handler requirements and be provided the opportunity to become ServSafe certified, which is a food and safety training certificate program administered by the National Restaurant Association. Trainees will also be able to program staff individually to review abilities, needs, preferences, and development of employment goals as well as participate in group sessions focused on workplace etiquette, interview skills, and resumes.
